No words': Temple University gymnast dies after falling from pole celebrating Eagles win

A Temple University student celebrating the Philadelphia Eagles victory over the Washington Commanders in the NFC championship game on Sunday has died after falling from a light pole and suffering critical injuries.

Tyler Sabapathy, a freshman at the school, died Tuesday, Temple University announced. He was 18.

The incident took place in Philadelphia at 15th and Market streets in Center City, reported the Bucks County Courier Times, part of the USA TODAY Network.

Video shows the teen above on the street pole before he fell onto the concrete sidewalk where officials, the outlet confirmed, said he he hit his head and suffered a brain injury.

He was taken to a hospital where he died Tuesday.

"There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing," the university released in a statement. "Our hearts go out to Tyler’s family, friends, classmates and all who knew and loved him."

Tyler Sabapathy was an accomplished gymnast

A native of Toronto, Canada, Sabapathy had been majoring in exercise and sport science and was a member of the university’s club gymnastics team.

"As an accomplished gymnast with more than 120 medals in provincial, regional and international competitions, Tyler was fascinated with injury prevention, and this ultimately led him to pursue the major that he did," the university wrote. "He no doubt had a bright future ahead of him, and it is so tragic that we will not be able to see how he would have made his mark on the world."

The university said it was offering counseling to students, faculty and staff.

Police said they are investigating reports of other injuries Sunday night, including shootings, a stabbing and assaults on police officers.

Several injured the same night after vehicle slammed into crowd

The student's fatal injuries took place the same evening a woman slammed a car into a crowd also celebrating the Eagle's victory in Philadelphia, police confirmed to USA TODAY this week.

More than a half-dozen people suffered injuries and a woman was taken into police custody after the car she drove struck a crowd of people at North Broad and Spring Garden streets about 9:30 p.m.

The intersection where the vehicle struck the crowd took place is about a half mile north of Philadelphia City Hall.

According to a preliminary report from police, a silver 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 struck multiple pedestrians before being stopped by police.

Eight people suffered injuries, ranging from pain to fractures, police said in a news release. So far no deaths have been reported in connection to that ongoing investigation.

It was not immediately know whether she had been charged yet in connection to the incident.

Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson Shawn Ritchie told USA TODAY the case remained under investigation on Wednesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills 32-29 on Sunday and will take on the Eagles at the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Feb. 9.

Prior to Sunday’s game, Mayor Cherelle Parker had warned fans to be careful while celebrating.
